When an Android Phone Becomes a GPS Device

Now drivers should be asking themselves: why do I need to spend even $200 for a GPS unit that sometimes makes mistakes when a just-as-smart (or dumb) smartphone can do the same thing?

Owners of smartphones that run the Android operating system are finding an even better reason: the navigation advice on an Android phone is free.

Google’s no-cost Maps app, bundled with Android smartphones, includes voice directions and turn-by-turn navigation, just like the stand-alone big boys. (This is a category in which Androids clearly trump iPhones. The iPhone’s Google Maps app does not offer these features.)

But is a free smartphone app as good as a device specifically designed for navigation? I set out to find out with a side-by-side test.

The manufacturers of navigation hardware, who have seen sales of stand-alone units drop almost 20 percent since their 2008 peak, argue that free and low-cost smartphone navigation apps and stand-alone devices can coexist. Each appeals to a different kind of person. Younger people are attracted to apps, while older drivers like stand-alone devices with larger screens, according to Bill Strand, Magellan’s senior product marketing manager.

To test this premise, I stuck Garmin’s Nuvi, model 2350LMT ($185), and Motorola’s latest Android phone, the Droid X2, onto the dashboard of my Audi. (There are hundreds of GPS models; I selected the Garmin as the representative because of its popularity.) Peering over this bank of devices, I took off with the children onto Los Angeles’s traffic-choked Ventura Freeway and down to Disneyland.

The Droid and Garmin both have 4.3-inch screens. The Droid’s screen was brighter and, with its reflective surface, appeared very sharp.

I typed in “Disney Grand California Hotel and Spa,” and the slight vibration let me know when a key push had been registered. By contrast, I often pushed the wrong button on the Garmin.

Each device’s maps were easy to follow and read; the graphics style comes down to personal preference. But if you like to catch a bird’s-eye view of your travels, only Google offers a satellite view of your route, much like its satellite view on a Google map on a computer. Graphic maps work just as well, but I found something satisfying about seeing what is really there on the ground.

When you approach your destination, Google Maps automatically switches to its familiar street view, giving a street-level shot of where you (hopefully) want to be. Using Google Maps to find my way home, I found it a bit discomfiting to suddenly see a photo of my house — that I hadn’t shot — as I drove up to it.

In navigation, seconds can mean the difference between getting off on the correct freeway exit or driving an extra 10 or 20 miles to the next one. Google Maps was generally quicker; at times, its voice commands arrived as much as three seconds sooner, which could make all the difference if your reflexes are not that snappy.

Google Maps also took first place when it came to searching for a destination. A search for the nearest Peet’s coffee stores on the Garmin took 27 seconds — and it never found the one closest to my home. The Garmin did not find it even when I was parked in front of the store. Perhaps Garmin’s maps supplier is a Starbucks fan.

Alas, speed does not always translate into accuracy. Neither of the devices was ever completely accurate, either in determining the shortest route or figuring out the location of an address.

While you can often change voices on stand-alone devices, switching to a female English voice, for example, instead of an American one, the Android smartphone used only computer generated speech. But it was very easy to comprehend and made no more pronunciation mistakes than any of its competitors.

On my trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, Google Maps missed the Disney Grand Californian Hotel and Spa by almost a mile, telling me to pull up in front of a cheap motel. But when a Google Maps user discovers an error, like that Disney hotel, he or she can report it directly from the smartphone. Users of stand-alone devices can report mistakes only by sending an e-mail or by visiting the company Web site. Not only does the smartphone give the system faster feedback, but it increases the likelihood that more people will report errors.

GPS companies generally update the maps free, but Google’s service does it instantly without any special effort. The Garmin and many other GPS units not only must be attached to a computer to update, but some devices, like those from Magellan, work only with Windows. Score another for Android.

When it comes to live traffic data and rerouting — I was driving partly during Carmaggedon weekend, when the 405 freeway was closed — it was a tie.

While all devices were pretty accurate in reporting accidents and slowdowns, the freeway system here means that it is almost always faster to simply stay put than to try to maneuver down side streets, which is what each device said as I crawled down the freeway.

But because traffic data is transmitted via an FM radio signal for stand-alone GPS units, it is available only if the device is plugged into the car’s power connector instead of running off its internal battery. An Android phone running Google Maps gathers traffic information even when operating via battery power. Score another for Android.

If you plan on using the Android’s Google Maps app on a regular basis, it might pay to have an unlimited data plan, as navigation apps tend to be data hogs.

So which would I use and which would go in the drawer with my floppy discs?

Climate Change Will Hit Genetic Diversity

Climate change represents a threat not only to the existence of individual species, but also to the genetic diversity hidden within them, researchers say. The finding promises to complicate assessments of how climate change will affect biodiversity, as well as conservationists’ task in preserving it.

DNA studies have revealed that traditional species, as defined by taxonomists, contain a vast amount of ‘cryptic’ diversity — such as different lineages, or even species within species. Carsten Nowak, a conservation biologist at the Senckenberg Research Institutes and Natural History Museum in Gelnhausen, Germany, and his colleagues have made a first attempt to understand how global warming might affect this form of diversity. Their findings are published in Nature Climate Change.

The team looked at aquatic insects living in the mountain streams of central Europe — seven species of caddisfly, a mayfly and a stonefly. The insects were chosen because they are likely to be especially vulnerable to rising temperatures — they need cold water, and have limited ability to travel large distances.

To measure genetic diversity, Nowak’s team sequenced genes in the animals’ mitochondria — energy-generating cellular organelles that have their own small genome. This allowed the authors to divide each species into a number of evolutionary significant units (ESUs) — the technical term for a population within a species that is genetically distinct from the rest of its kind.

On the basis of where in Europe each ESU is found, the researchers then analysed whether the associated insect would be able to tolerate higher temperatures or move to somewhere cooler, using two models developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Lost potential

Under the IPCC’s business-as-usual climate scenario, 79% of ESUs included in the study are projected to become extinct by 2080; for a reduced-emissions scenario this fell to 59%. ESUs suffered a much greater rate of extinctions than species.

This lost evolutionary potential could hinder species’ ability to adapt to change. “This genetic diversity is the most fundamental form of biodiversity — essentially, it’s the substrate for evolution,” says Nowak.

The study “shows how global climate change may lead to the loss of significant amounts of hidden diversity, even if some of the traditionally defined species will persist,” says Michael Balke, an entomologist at the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology in Munich, Germany.

What is not clear is how to extend this approach to other species with different powers of migration or dispersal. “If researchers can figure out how to factor in dispersal capacity — an attribute often not well-defined for individual species — the potential impact on genetic diversity becomes a lot more applicable,” says Jim Provan, a molecular geneticist at Queen’s University in Belfast, UK.

Study co-author Steffen Pauls of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, Germany, agrees that such factors are also important. “We hope that this approach will be developed further to incorporate different migratory abilities, types of dispersal and thermal adaptability,” he says.

Diversity danger zone

“For Europe, it turns out that the most genetically diverse regions are also the most endangered,” says Nowak. The study predicts that loss of genetic diversity in the study insects will be greatest in the Mediterranean region, where all but two populations are projected to become extinct. This is also the region with the greatest genetic diversity.

This combination of genetic diversity and vulnerability has been found for other Mediterranean species, such as the seaweed,Chondrus crispus, which has already shifted northward during the past 40 years. Many European species retreated to the Mediterranean during past ice ages, meaning that their southerly populations are especially ancient and diverse. The loss of these populations might compromise species’ ability to adapt to future warming.

Genetic diversity is gaining increased attention in conservation circles. “Through our work to determine climate-adaptation strategies, we realize that genetics is one way to get an overall better view of how species are affected by climate change,” says Ahmed Djoghlaf​, executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations treaty that commits signatories to develop national strategies to sustainably use and conserve biodiversity.

Combining genetics and ecology should aid conservation efforts. “This study highlights the huge potential of DNA-sequencing initiatives to reveal high levels of cryptic diversity, of utmost importance to informed conservation decision making,” says Balke.

Last year’s adoption of a treaty to manage and share the economic benefits of the world’s genetic resources with developing nations, the Nagoya Protocol, has also boosted interest in cataloging genetic diversity. “Countries are starting to invest more to document genetic aspects of species in their national jurisdictions, to better understand how to get reimbursed for their use,” says Djoghlaf.

This is the year that consumers prove the naysayers wrong and begin using videophones in their day-to-day lives, as simple videoconference apps like FaceTime for iPhone and Fring (iPhone and Android) make the technology pervasive. It’ll get a boost from tablets, including the iPad 2, which is expected to boast a camera. It’s almost like… oh, yeah, 2001, which had not only videophones, but also an iPad-like tablet. Probability: high.

THE SMARTPHONE WALLET: The phone will continue its steady march toward becoming our most essential single possession as manufacturers begin adding smart payment functionality—chips that essentially turn our phones into credit cards. Probability: high.

WIKIEVERYTHING: Inspired by the impact of WikiLeaks, the start of 2011 will witness the arrival of a fresh batch of industry-specific document-leaking websites, the majority of them named with some variation of “Wiki” or “Leaks.” Some will focus on the financial industry, others on the media, professional sports, and high tech. At least one specific sector will be rocked to the core, leading to multiple high-profile resignations, a period of public shaming, and consequential high-impact legislative action. Probability: high.

MUSIC IN THE CLOUD: Throughout the past 25 years, we’ve evolved from storing our music on hundreds of 12-inch vinyl records in bookshelves to one 6-inch external hard drive stuffed down beneath a desk. 2011 will be the year we cut the cord of ownership and begin storing our files out on the cloud. MULTIMEDIA BOOKS: Remember when the rise of CD-ROMs brought with it the notion of the multimedia book? As the capabilities of e-readers like the Kindle and Nook grow, and as tablets like the iPad set the standard for consuming electronic content, more publishers will feel the push to turn books into hybrid forms that combine audio and video. The shift will be apparent mainly in nonfiction, where biographies will begin to include video and audio recordings of their subjects, but some clever practitioners will produce killer multimedia ebooks that will begin to blur the lines between novel and videogame. Probability: high.

STEVE JOBS: NEWSPAPER BARON: As more papers experiment with pay walls in 2011, app-based subscriptions will grow, giving Apple a cut of the news business across many publications.
